It all depends on what gear you're looking at and also how much are you willing to pay out. If anyone has any experience I will be happy to take in any information! I shall be attending the MPS in London later on this month to get further information regarding products that could benefit my setup.ĭepending on what your gear features regarding connections you could route many signals such as Pro Tools returns, Tape Returns, Direct Outs and Insert points from the mixer. I have been keeping my mind on the SSL Alpha-Link MADI AX with the MADIXtreme PCIe MADI Card. I will have to do further research into real life setups that fulfil my specifications. I'm tempted to go the MADI route so that later on I can expand my I/O's & interfaces with the convenience of one cable. I have been looking into the RME PCIe's that come with Total mix which looks and sounds great for the routing capabilities it has to offer. Maybe they could help you with the details of your particular board and goals. You might want to check out the RME forum- there might be people with a setup similar to what you're going for. Since I'm personally not in love with owning a bunch of stuff, it helps- I've cut down on the amount of hardware and cable I use. So in my experience, Totalmix serves as a sort of digital router/mixer of all of my signals. Totalmix can allow you to do all kinds of routing- what's more, like I said in my previous post, you can switch between complex routings via 8 assignable presets. I think your question is all about routing. To be fair, dealing with two Totalmixes at once is mind boggling! I can run them both simultaneously! My A16mkii is hooked up to two of the RayDAT's ADAT I/Os, my FF400 is hooked up to one I/O, and my ISA428 is hooked up to one I. It has 36 I/O's (72 total), which is plenty. It will be hard to find one of those used so you will pay much more for the same functions as the 9652.įor my interface, I use an RME RayDAT. If your computer doesn't have any PCI slots and only PCIe then substitute a RME Raydat interface. Perfect for use with an analog mixer for a hybrid setup for only $1500 total. ![]() It's expandable too by just adding more HD24XR's and 9652's up to 72 channels I/O. Twenty four channels of good conversion with one of the best low latency under full load interfaces out there. Used Alesis HD24XR ($1200), used RME PCI 9652 ($300, but get the newer version with 2 midi I/O). Thunderbolt is basically just an external PCIe slot and even though this is just the first generation "wire Thunderbolt" which is much slower than "optical Thunderbolt" there should be some new interfaces that will do 24 channels I/O without choking but look for real world user reports.ĭo a search here on this combo, plenty of prior posts about it. Practically speaking using a USB or Firewire interface limits you to 16 channels I/O max as they tend to choke after that that. Would be brilliant help if I could have a few suggestions and ideas from anyone who's encountered this specification or something similar.Īs a general rule what I detail below makes a great combo but the fact that you want to interface Protools complicates and limits your choices so do your research. Or maybe look into two Ferrofish A16 MKIIs or equivalent connected to a Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe via ADAT. I have looked into various systems such as the SSL XLogic Alpha-Link MADI AX connected to a firewire interface via MADI or ADAT, Apogee Symphony I/O (24x24 analogue I/O + 8x8 AES/Optical I/O) and possibly wait until they release the Thunderbolt connection. I need 24 channels of analogue I/O which connects from my direct outs into an interface to my mac via firewire or thunderbolt and then back out into my tape returns.įor monitoring all of my sources I am going to look into the Presonus Central Station so I can run any audio sources from my mac simultaneously with my control room out on my console. What I am looking to do is use my console for mixing, tracking and routing various signals with Pro Tools 10 capturing my tracking and mixes. ![]() ![]() I have recently bought a 24 channel Soundtracs Topaz Project 8 console and am researching various combinations of gear so that my I/O's are linked, accessible and flexible for my project studio.
